The Salem Hardy Plant Society is a not-for-profit
organization
promoting the use of hardy perennial plants. It seeks to collect
and disseminate source information about hardy plants and their
availability. The Society supports community garden projects and
cooperates with and complements the activities of other horticultural
organizations of the Pacific Northwest.
Monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the months of
October through May in the west auditorium of the Salem Heights Hall,
3505 Liberty Road South (at the corner of Liberty Road South
and Madrona). The meetings begin with set-up and social activity
at 6:30 PM; talks normally begin about 7:15 PM.

In the Garden with Mike Darcy
Our third potluck of the summer will be In The Garden with Mike and Linda Darcy on Tuesday, August 3rd. Last summer's experimental venture to the garden of Dick and Karen Cavender in Sherwood proved that SHPS members will happily travel out of the neighborhood to see wonderful gardens. Here is another great one. Mike has been a notable and familiar leader in the Northwest garden community. Come and join us in the garden that has been featured in numerous publications and has been an inspiration for Mike's own radio and television shows, writings, and presentations. We will have our traditional summer potluck in August, but for those who would like to join us for a meal but who don't wish to bring along a dish to share, Mike is offering a very nice service (see below). Whichever you choose, do come and enjoy a special evening.

In Mike's own words...
We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, August 3rd. The weather will be beautiful. Many of you have never been to our garden and here are easy directions.
Mike and Linda Darcy
2311 Prestwick Rd.
Lake Oswego
Coming up I-5 north, take the Lake Oswego exit and turn right onto Boones Ferry Road. You will stay on Boones Ferry Road for several miles and will pass through the area of Lake Grove. After you cross the traffic light at Kruse Way, there is another traffic light almost immediately. After this second light, turn right at the next street, Twin Fir; there is a Hope Church on the corner. From Twin Fir, turn left at the first street which will be Fir Ridge. Go to the end of Fir Ridge to stop sign; this is Wembley Park Road. Turn left. Follow this as it curves and you will come to a small neighborhood park, Prestwick Park. Turn right here; we are up the hill, our house number is 2311 Prestwick Road, and our house is on the left. We have a steep drive going down and there is a banner at the top of our drive. The street is narrow but parking is ok along it. If you get lost, my cell is 503/504-2694.
Choices:
- Bread: sour dough or rye
- Ranch ham, Swiss cheese and grain mustard
- Roasted turkey, provolone and pesto mayonnaise
- Roast beef, cheddar and grilled onions
Comes with chips, fruit salad, cookie, and Blue Sky Soda
You need to email me with your choice; cost is $11. You can pay me when you get the box lunch. I need to have your order by Sunday evening, August 1st, as I need to place the order on Monday morning. My email is itgmikedarcy@comcast.net.
There will be no monthly meeting in September. Go directly to the plant sale instead.

Mark Saturday, September 11th, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on
your calendars for the shopping spree of a lifetime! What better way to
indulge your "needs" than to help support your plant Society in its
annual fundraiser. The money which we accrue enables us to realize some
aspects of the community outreach which is part of our mission: two
horticulture scholarships through Clackamas Community College;
financial assistance to historic preservation efforts of some local
gardens; and the purchase/donation of gardening books to the Salem
Public Library. So if you have any pangs about buying that extra plant
(or two!), be assured that you are supporting a very worthy cause.
We have excellent vendors committed to be there with
a wide variety of plants as well as garden art-all under one roof. Many
are returning; some are new. As you know, it is very special to be able
to talk to the growers directly. We are also working to respond to
vendors' suggestions about how to improve the experience by totally
rearranging the configuration of tables as well as increasing the
lighting.
Directions from Salem to the SHPS Plant Sale:
Take the Marion Street bridge to Highway 22 west
toward the coast. Go 10 miles to the stoplight at Highway 99W and turn
left. The fairgrounds are 1/4 mile on the left. Look for the yellow
signs.
